Castello di Pozzol Groppo
Italy, Italy
Castello di Pozzol Groppo, also known as the Castello dei Malaspina, is a historic castle located on a hilltop in Pozzol Groppo, in the Province of Alessandria, Piedmont.
Built in the late 12th century on the site of a former Roman watchtower, it occupied a strategic position overlooking the surrounding valleys and routes through the Apennines. The castle was extensively renovated in the 16th century by the powerful Malaspina family, who owned it until the late 19th century.
Its imposing structure is crowned by three battlemented towers, while the interiors feature large halls, Renaissance fireplaces, coffered ceilings, and frescoed decorations that reflect its noble history.
