Castello di Pozzolo Formigaro
Pozzolo Formigaro, Italy, Italy
Castello di Pozzolo Formigaro is a medieval castle in the town of Pozzolo Formigaro, Piedmont, with origins dating back to the 11th century.
Positioned at an important crossroads used since Roman times, it played a key defensive role and was involved in many conflicts between regional powers, including Milan and Monferrato. The castle was heavily rebuilt in the 15th century after suffering war damage and features characteristic elements of Lombard military architecture, including a fortified entrance, a tower, traces of a drawbridge, and defensive walls.
Over time, noble families such as the Sauli family added residential sections that softened its original military appearance. Today, the restored castle serves as the town hall of Pozzolo Formigaro. Visitors can admire its historic architecture and cultural treasures, including Renaissance frescoes, historical artifacts, and artworks that reflect the area's rich heritage.
