Castello di Rocca San Felice
Italy, Italy
Castello di Rocca San Felice is a medieval hilltop fortress in the village of Rocca San Felice in Campania, Italy.
Most historians believe it was originally built by the Lombards around the 9th century to defend the Duchy of Benevento and monitor the surrounding countryside from its strategic position high above the Valle d’Ansanto. The castle was later restored and expanded by the Normans, becoming an important military and administrative stronghold.
Over the centuries it passed through the hands of several noble families, gradually evolving from a defensive fortress into a residential complex before suffering damage from earthquakes and eventual decline. Today, visitors can see remains of the fortress walls, entrance structures, and its impressive cylindrical keep, or donjon, which remains the castle’s most recognizable feature.
