Castello di San Giorgio is one of Mantua’s most iconic landmarks and a key part of the Gonzaga Ducal Palace complex.

Built between 1395 and 1406 for Francesco I Gonzaga, the castle was originally designed as a fortified stronghold, featuring a square plan, four corner towers, a surrounding moat, and drawbridges for defense. During the 15th century, the Gonzaga family transformed the fortress into an elegant princely residence.

It became closely associated with Isabella d’Este, one of the leading figures of the Italian Renaissance, and housed important artistic works, including Andrea Mantegna’s famous Camera degli Sposi. Over the centuries, the castle served as both a noble residence and a prison, holding notable political prisoners during Austrian rule.

Today, it remains one of the most significant monuments in Mantua, celebrated for its impressive medieval architecture, Renaissance heritage, and central role in the history of the Gonzaga dynasty.
