Verified Castello di San Martino della Vaneza

San Martino, Italy, Italy

Castello di San Martino della Vaneza is a medieval castle located in San Martino, near Cervarese Santa Croce in the Veneto region of Italy.

Built along the Bacchiglione River and near the historic border between Padua and Vicenza, it occupied a strategic position that allowed it to control trade and movement through the area. Its oldest surviving structure, a defensive tower, dates back to the 11th century. During the 14th century, the Carraresi family strengthened and expanded the fortress, adding defensive walls and transforming it into an important part of Padua’s western defense system.

The castle was one of the few regional fortifications to survive many medieval conflicts without being destroyed. After Venetian rule was established, the castle gradually lost its military importance and was adapted for commercial purposes, particularly for the storage and transport of timber and other goods shipped along the river toward Venice.

Today, the castle is a well-preserved historic landmark that houses the Bacchiglione River Museum and serves as a cultural venue, offering visitors insight into the military, commercial, and river history of the region.
