Castello di San Pietro - Rudere
Bormio, Province of Sondrio, Italy, Italy
Castello di San Pietro is a ruined medieval fortress located on the slopes of Monte Reit above Bormio.
Historical records mention the castle as early as the 13th century, when it served as an important defensive stronghold protecting the town and controlling access to the surrounding valleys. The castle originally consisted of several towers and defensive structures, but it was destroyed in 1376 during a Visconti attack led by Giovanni Cane.
Over time, most of the fortification disappeared, and today only portions of a square tower and other scattered ruins remain. Near the castle are the remains of the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, often called the “Gesa Rota” or “Broken Church,” adding to the site's historical atmosphere. Today, the ruins are valued for their medieval heritage and for the beautiful views they offer over Bormio and the surrounding Alpine landscape.
