Castello di San Vigilio is a historic hilltop fortress overlooking Bergamo’s Upper Town and has been a key defensive site for more than a thousand years.

The earliest fortifications date back to around the 6th century, although the hill was likely used as a lookout point even in Roman times. Over the centuries, the castle was expanded by local rulers, the Visconti family, and later the Republic of Venice because of its strategic position above the city. The fortress was considered the last line of defense for Bergamo and was equipped with towers, battlements, secret tunnels, and escape routes.

Its structure was adapted several times to meet changing military needs, eventually developing its distinctive star-shaped layout. Today, the castle is owned by the municipality and is open to the public. Visitors can explore its surviving towers and walls, enjoy panoramic views of Bergamo and the surrounding hills, and discover parts of the underground passages that once linked the fortress to the city’s defensive network.
