Castello di Soncino
Soncino, Province of Cremona, Italy, Italy
Castello di Soncino, also known as the Rocca Sforzesca, is a magnificent medieval fortress in the town of Soncino, in the Province of Cremona, Lombardy.
Although the site has defensive origins dating back to the 10th century, the castle largely took its current form in the late 15th century under the Sforza family, who strengthened it as a key military outpost along the border with the Republic of Venice. Built of red brick and surrounded by a moat, the fortress features imposing walls, drawbridges, battlements, and powerful corner towers, making it one of the best-preserved examples of military architecture in Lombardy.
Over time, it evolved from a defensive stronghold into a noble residence. Today, the castle is one of Soncino’s most important landmarks and a major tourist attraction. It hosts museums, exhibitions, and cultural events, offering visitors an impressive glimpse into the region’s medieval and Renaissance history.
