Castello di Spilimbergo
Spilimbergo, Italy, Italy
Castello di Spilimbergo is a historic castle complex in the town of Spilimbergo, Friuli Venezia Giulia, originally built between the 10th and 11th centuries to guard an important crossing of the Tagliamento River.
Founded by the noble Spengenberg family, from whom the town takes its name, the castle grew into a powerful feudal center and endured centuries of wars, fires, sieges, and rebuilding. Today, rather than a single fortress, it appears as a group of elegant palaces surrounding a large courtyard, featuring a blend of Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance architecture.
It is especially known for the beautifully frescoed Palazzo Dipinto and its connections to notable historical figures, including Emperor Charles V, who stayed there in 1532.
