Castello di Taormina, also known as the Saracen Castle or Monte Tauro Castle, stands high above Taormina on Mount Tauro, at nearly 400 meters above sea level.

Built on the site of the ancient Greek acropolis, the fortress occupies a commanding position with spectacular views of the Ionian coast, Mount Etna, and the surrounding valleys. The castle's origins date back to the Arab period after the conquest of Taormina in 902, although earlier Greek, Roman, and Byzantine fortifications likely existed on the site.

It was later rebuilt and modified by the Normans and Swabians, becoming part of Sicily’s wider network of defensive strongholds. Today, visitors can explore the remains of its walls, towers, cisterns, and underground passages while enjoying some of the finest panoramic views in Sicily. After decades of closure, the castle reopened to the public in 2024 and remains one of Taormina’s most fascinating historical attractions.
