Castello di Torrate
Chions, Italy
Castello di Torrate, located in the hamlet of Torrate in Chions, Italy, is a medieval castle likely founded around the year 1000 as a defense against Hungarian invasions. It was historically owned by the noble Sbrojavacca family, feudatories of the Patriarchate of Aquileia, from the 12th to the 14th century.
The castle saw conflict during this period, including an assault in 1251 by troops of Alberigo da Romano and a significant sack in 1511 by forces rebelling against the Republic of Venice. In the 19th century, it was transformed into a residential building by architect Francesco Maria Preti, but much of it was demolished around 1820, leaving only a single square tower standing today.
The site also includes the small church of San Giuliano, dating back to 1332 and rebuilt in the 17th century, once part of the castle complex. The tower and church remain important historical markers of the area’s medieval past and noble lineage.
