Castello di Udine
Udine, Italy, Italy
Castello di Udine is the historic symbol of Udine, standing atop a prominent hill in the city center.
Its origins trace back to a medieval fortress first documented in 983, while the present Renaissance-style building was constructed between 1517 and the late 16th century after the original castle was damaged by a devastating earthquake in 1511. Over the centuries, it served as the residence of the Patriarchs of Aquileia and later the Venetian governors of Friuli.
Today, the castle houses several civic museums featuring art, archaeology, history, and photography collections, and offers panoramic views of Udine, the surrounding plains, and the Alps.
