Castello di Ussel is a medieval castle perched on a rocky outcrop above the town of Châtillon in Italy’s Aosta Valley.
Built in 1343 by Ebalo II of Challant, it was strategically positioned to control access to the Valtournenche valley and the surrounding trade routes. The castle is especially important because it was the first “single-block” castle in the Aosta Valley, marking a significant development in regional military architecture.
After centuries under the Challant family, it was used as a prison and barracks before eventually being abandoned. Extensively restored in the late 20th century, Castello di Ussel is now used as a cultural and exhibition venue. Its imposing stone structure, historic significance, and panoramic views make it one of the most distinctive landmarks in the Aosta Valley.
