Castello di Verrès
Italy, Italy
Castello di Verrès in Italy is a unique 14th-century fortress built by Yblet de Challant around 1390, located on a rocky promontory overlooking the town of Verrès and the Val d'Ayas.
Unlike typical castles of its time, it was constructed as a single massive cubic structure about thirty meters on each side, combining military defense with refined architecture.
Its geometric simplicity and austere exterior conceal well-designed internal spaces connected by a grand stone staircase supported by flying buttresses. The castle’s strategic position provided control over the valley entrance, and its thick stone walls were later reinforced in the 16th century to adapt to modern firearms.
Today, it stands fully restored and open to visitors who can appreciate its stark interior, commanding views, and cultural events like the historical Verrès Carnival. The castle is noted for seamlessly blending functionality and innovation with its imposing but elegant design, making it one of the most remarkable medieval castles in the Aosta Valley.
