Verified Castello Eleonora D'Arborea

Sanluri, Italy, Italy

Castello Eleonora D'Arborea, also known as the Castle of Sanluri, is one of Sardinia’s best-preserved medieval fortresses and the island’s only castle that remains continuously inhabited.

Located in the town of Sanluri, it was built as a strategic stronghold during the Middle Ages and was later strengthened by King Peter IV of Aragon in 1355. The castle played an important role in the long conflict between the Kingdom of Aragon and the Judicate of Arborea, particularly during the decisive Battle of Sanluri in 1409.

Although it is popularly associated with the famous Sardinian ruler Eleonora d'Arborea, there is no definitive evidence that she ever lived there. Today, the fortress serves as a museum containing historical artifacts, weapons, documents, and artworks that illustrate Sardinia’s past. Its imposing towers, thick walls, and well-preserved interiors make it one of the island’s most significant and fascinating historical landmarks.
