Verified Castello Estense

Ferrara, Italy, Italy

Castello Estense, also known as the Castle of Saint Michael, is the iconic landmark of Ferrara and one of Italy’s best-preserved medieval castles.

Built in 1385 by Niccolò II d’Este after a popular uprising, it was originally designed as a defensive fortress to protect the ruling Este family. The castle is famous for its massive brick walls, four corner towers, drawbridges, and the moat that still surrounds it today. As Ferrara grew and became a flourishing Renaissance center, the fortress was gradually transformed into an elegant ducal residence.

Magnificent apartments, frescoed halls, gardens, and ceremonial rooms were added, blending military architecture with Renaissance luxury. Today, Castello Estense is a museum and one of the city’s most important attractions. Visitors can explore its historic rooms, prisons, courtyards, and towers while learning about the history of the Este dynasty and Ferrara’s cultural heritage.
