Castello Franceschelli is a historic fortified palace in the hilltop village of Montazzoli in Italy’s Abruzzo region.

Its origins date back to the Norman period in the 11th century, when it served as a defensive fortress overlooking the surrounding territory. After being largely abandoned during the late Middle Ages, it was transformed into a noble residence in the 17th century by the influential Franceschelli family, from whom it takes its name. The castle combines medieval defensive elements with aristocratic features, including courtyards, vaulted passages, former stables, and traces of a drawbridge.

Although parts of the structure were rebuilt after the 1907 earthquake, it still preserves much of its historic character and commanding position above the village. Today, Castello Franceschelli remains one of Montazzoli’s most important landmarks. Still privately owned, it reflects centuries of local history and offers a striking example of how a medieval fortress evolved into a noble baronial residence.
