Castello Gerione
Italy, Italy
Castello Gerione is a medieval fortress located on a hill above the town of Campagna in the province of Salerno, Campania.
Believed to date back to the 10th century, it was originally built during the Lombard period to control important routes through the surrounding mountains and the Sele Valley. Over the centuries, the castle served as a strategic military stronghold under Lombard, Norman, and later imperial rule. It gained particular importance during the reign of Frederick II and even provided refuge to Pope Urban VI in the 14th century.
By the early 16th century, however, it had lost its military role and gradually fell into decline. Today, Castello Gerione survives mainly as evocative ruins covering a large hilltop site. Although only parts of its walls, towers, and defensive structures remain, the castle continues to be valued for its historical significance and the panoramic views it offers over Campagna and the surrounding landscape.
