Castello Giudicale di Arculentu
Arbus, Province of Medio Campidano, Italy, Italy
Castello Giudicale di Arculentu, also known as Castello di Arcuentu, is a medieval fortress ruin perched on the summit of Monte Arcuentu near Arbus in southwestern Sardinia.
Built during the 12th century at an elevation of about 784 meters, it occupied a strategic position on the border between the medieval Judicates of Arborea and Cagliari, allowing it to control important routes and defend the surrounding territory. The castle is closely linked to the Judicate of Arborea and to Judge Barisone I, who pledged it to Genoa in 1164 in exchange for financial and political support.
It later returned to Arborean control and continued to serve as a military stronghold for the region. Today, only ruins remain, including sections of walls, cisterns, and traces of defensive structures. Despite its ruined state, the site is valued for its historical importance and spectacular views over Sardinia’s rugged landscape, making it one of the island’s most evocative medieval landmarks.
