Castello Malaspina di Varzi is a historic castle located in the heart of the medieval town of Varzi, in the Upper Staffora Valley of the Oltrepò Pavese.

Its origins date back to the 13th century, and it is closely linked to the powerful Malaspina family, who ruled the area after receiving the territory from Emperor Frederick Barbarossa in 1164. Over the centuries, the fortress evolved from a defensive stronghold into a noble residence. The complex includes medieval walls, courtyards, historic halls, and a prominent tower that overlooks the village and surrounding hills.

Different sections of the castle reflect architectural additions from the Middle Ages through the 18th century. Today, the castle remains one of Varzi’s most important landmarks. Carefully restored by the Odetti family, descendants of the Malaspina lineage through marriage, it is open for guided visits, cultural events, and private functions, offering visitors a glimpse into more than eight centuries of local history.
