Castello Masegra
Sondrio, Province of Sondrio, Italy, Italy
Castello Masegra is a historic castle overlooking the city of Sondrio from a strategic hill at the entrance to the Valmalenco valley.
Originally built in the medieval period by the powerful Capitanei family, it is the only medieval military structure in Sondrio to have survived intact into modern times. Over the centuries, the castle evolved from a defensive fortress into a noble residence and later served as an agricultural estate, military garrison, and administrative center.
Its architecture reflects these different periods, combining medieval fortifications with Renaissance features, including elegant frescoed rooms and decorative loggias. Today, Castello Masegra is one of Sondrio’s most important landmarks and houses the CAST, the Castle of Mountain Stories, a museum dedicated to Alpine culture and history. Visitors can explore its historic spaces while enjoying panoramic views of Sondrio, the Valtellina valley, and the surrounding mountains.
