Castello Orguglioso o di Sassai
Italy, Italy
Castello Orguglioso, also known as Castello di Sassai, is a medieval fortress located near Silius in southeastern Sardinia.
Built between the 12th and 13th centuries by the rulers of Cagliari, it was strategically positioned on a hilltop to guard the border with the neighboring Judicate of Arborea and to oversee important routes through the region. The castle had a short but eventful history. During the Sardinian-Catalan wars, it was attacked and captured in 1353 by forces loyal to Mariano IV of Arborea.
After its destruction, the fortress was abandoned and never rebuilt, becoming a symbol of the turbulent period when control of Sardinia was fiercely contested. Today, only the ruins remain, including sections of walls, towers, and ancient structures uncovered through archaeological excavations. Set in a scenic rural landscape, the site offers visitors a glimpse into Sardinia’s medieval past and panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.
