Castello Ruffo di Scilla
Scilla, Italy, Italy
Castello Ruffo di Scilla in Italy is an ancient fortress located on the promontory of Scilla, overlooking the Strait of Messina.
Its origins trace back to the early 5th century BC when Anaxilas, the tyrant of Reggio, built the first fortifications to defend against Tyrrhenian pirate raids. Over centuries, the castle saw expansions and restorations by different rulers, including the Romans and later the Ruffo family, who acquired it in the 16th century and transformed it into a princely residence.
The castle features an irregular but fortress-like layout with curtain walls, towers, and loopholes for defense. It has a notable entrance with a pointed arch bearing the Ruffo family coat of arms and includes a large courtyard and residential rooms that offer panoramic views of the coast. The castle was damaged by earthquakes in 1783 and 1908 but has since been restored.
Today, it serves as a cultural center hosting exhibitions and events, and it also houses the Scilla Lighthouse, a popular landmark on the coast known for its scenic beauty and historical significance related to defense and maritime control.
