Castello Ruspoli-Candriano
Torella dei Lombardi, Province of Avellino, Italy, Italy
Castello Ruspoli-Candriano is a historic castle in the center of Torella dei Lombardi, Campania, occupying the highest part of the town’s medieval settlement.
Its origins date back to the Lombard period between the 9th and 11th centuries, and it was later expanded and modified during Norman and Swabian rule. Over the centuries, the fortress evolved from a defensive stronghold into an aristocratic residence. Following the marriage of members of the Caracciolo and Ruspoli families, it became known as Castello Ruspoli-Candriano.
The castle is especially notable for its impressive cylindrical keep and round towers, which were added after a major earthquake in the 15th century. After being damaged by the 1980 earthquake, the castle was carefully restored and now serves as a cultural and civic landmark. It houses the town hall, a civic museum displaying archaeological finds, a tourist office, and an exhibition dedicated to film director Sergio Leone, making it an important historical and cultural center for the community.
