Castello Svevo, also known as the Swabian Castle of Brindisi, is a medieval fortress located near the city’s historic center and overlooking the inner harbor.

It was commissioned by Emperor Frederick II in the early 13th century to protect the port and strengthen imperial control over this strategically important coastal city. Over the centuries, the castle was expanded and reinforced by Angevin, Aragonese, and Spanish rulers, who adapted it to new military technologies and defensive needs.

Its imposing walls, towers, and fortifications reflect the evolution of military architecture from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance. The castle later served as a prison, a naval base, and an important military headquarters. Today, it remains one of Brindisi’s most significant historic landmarks, symbolizing the city’s long connection to the sea and its role as a major Mediterranean port.
