Castello Svevo di Trani is a striking medieval fortress located on the Adriatic coast next to Trani’s famous cathedral.

Built between 1233 and 1249 by Emperor Frederick II of Swabia, it formed part of a network of castles designed to defend the Kingdom of Sicily and control important coastal routes. The castle is known for its square layout, four corner towers, and impressive position by the sea.

Over the centuries, it was adapted to new military technologies, including the addition of Renaissance bastions, and later served as a prison and military facility. Today, the fortress is one of Trani’s most important landmarks and one of the best-preserved castles associated with Frederick II. Open to visitors, it hosts exhibitions and cultural events while offering a fascinating glimpse into the military and architectural history of southern Italy.
