Castello Tramontano is a striking 16th-century fortress that stands on a hill overlooking the historic city of Matera in Basilicata.

Construction began in 1501 under Count Giovan Carlo Tramontano, who intended the castle to symbolize and strengthen his control over the city and surrounding lands. Built in the Aragonese style, the castle features a large central tower flanked by two round towers with battlements and defensive openings.

However, growing resentment over the heavy taxes used to fund the project led to the count’s assassination in 1514, and the castle was never completed. Today, Castello Tramontano is one of Matera’s most recognizable landmarks. Its unfinished appearance, distinctive architecture, and panoramic views over the city make it an important symbol of Matera’s history and a popular venue for cultural events.
