Verified Castello Vecchio o di San Faustino

Grosio, Province of Sondrio, Italy, Italy

Castello Vecchio, also known as the Castle of San Faustino, is the oldest of the two medieval castles that stand on the hill above Grosio in Valtellina.

Built around the 10th or 11th century and first mentioned in historical records in 1150, it occupied a strategic position controlling routes through the valley and toward the Mortirolo Pass. Today, the castle survives mainly as ruins, with portions of its walls, foundations, and the distinctive Romanesque bell tower of the chapel dedicated to Saints Faustino and Giovita still visible.

Archaeological research has also revealed traces of even earlier religious structures and rock-cut tombs dating back to the early medieval period. Set within the Parco delle Incisioni Rupestri di Grosio, the site is valued for its historical importance, scenic location, and impressive views over the Valtellina valley. Visitors can explore the ruins while enjoying a unique combination of medieval heritage, archaeology, and mountain landscapes.
