Castello Visconteo di Macconago is a medieval castle located in the historic hamlet of Macconago on the southern edge of Milan, within the natural area known as Oasi Mirasole. The fortress was originally built in the 1330s and expanded in the 1340s with watchtowers and defensive structures, serving as a strategic stronghold for the surrounding countryside. The castle has a distinctive square layout with brick walls, towers, and crenellated walkways. Over the centuries it passed through several noble families, including the Pusterla and Visconti families, and underwent numerous modifications while preserving important medieval features. Inside, traces of Renaissance-era graffiti and historic architectural elements reflect its long history. Today, the castle is privately owned and generally closed to visitors. Despite its secluded location, it remains one of Milan’s most charming and lesser-known historic landmarks, offering a rare glimpse into the city’s medieval past. An 18th-century church standing nearby further enhances the atmosphere of the ancient village setting.
