Castle and Castle Tower
Lauenburg, Germany, Germany
Castle and Castle Tower in Lauenburg/Elbe, Germany, form the remnants of Lauenburger Schloss, a medieval fortress founded in 1182 by Bernard of Saxony as Polabenburg to control the Elbe River crossing and the Old Salt Route.
Transformed in the 15th century by Duke John IV into a late-Gothic palace with Renaissance details, it included a prominent defensive tower completed in 1477 featuring two-meter-thick walls, original prison cells, loopholes, and powder chambers for artillery.
A castle church built in 1595 commemorated the duke's return from Ottoman wars, though much of the complex was lost over time, leaving the tower as the main landmark offering panoramic views.
