Castle and Museum Oebisfelde
Germany, Germany
Castle and Museum Oebisfelde, known as Sumpfburg Oebisfelde, is one of Europe's oldest preserved marsh castles, built in the 11th century on a sandy island amid the Drömling marshlands near the Aller River crossing in Oebisfelde-Weferlingen, Saxony-Anhalt, Germany.
First documented between 1014-1073 as Ysfelde, it protected trade routes against Slavic tribes, featuring an inner bailey with a 27-meter keep, great hall, residential buildings, and brewery, plus an outer bailey with chapel, gatehouse, and farm structures that withstood sieges until damage in the 1547 Schmalkaldic War.
Lying in the inner German border's restricted zone for decades, it now serves as a cultural center with a 600-square-meter local history museum run by the Heimatverein, hosting concerts, markets, a library, tourist info, and panoramic tower views.
