Castle Augustusburg
Augustusburg, Germany, Germany
Castle Augustusburg is a stunning Rococo palace in Brühl, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, built from 1725 on the ruins of a medieval moated castle destroyed by French troops in 1689 during the War of the Palatine Succession.
Commissioned by Clemens August of Bavaria, Archbishop-Elector of Cologne, it was designed by Johann Conrad Schlaun with later contributions from François de Cuvilliés for opulent interiors and Johann Balthasar Neumann for the iconic grand staircase, forming a U-shaped complex with Falkenlust hunting lodge that earned UNESCO World Heritage status in 1984.
Together they represent early German Rococo mastery, featuring lavish stucco work, frescoes, and landscaped gardens inspired by Versailles.
