Castle Freudenthal and City Park
Uslar, Germany, Germany
Castle Freudenthal and City Park in Uslar, Lower Saxony, Germany, together form a historic site and green space southwest of the town center.
Castle Freudenthal was a large Weser‑Renaissance residence built between 1559 and 1565 for Duke Erich II of Braunschweig‑Lüneburg, who intended it as a hunting and pleasure lodge, but it burned down in 1612 after a lightning strike and was never fully rebuilt, now surviving only as scattered wall fragments and the base of an octagonal tower in the park.
The surrounding City Park, also called the Schlosspark, is a landscaped area that incorporates the former castle grounds and offers walking paths, lawns, and views of the remaining ruins against the backdrop of the Solling hills.
The site is more of a quiet park and historical reminder than a fully restored castle, yet it remains one of Uslar’s most distinctive cultural and recreational landmarks.
