Castle Gunzburg of 1452
Günzburg, Germany
The castle in Günzburg, known historically as a residence converted largely between 1577 and 1580 in Renaissance style, was built by Archduke Ferdinand II of Austria.
Located in the southwestern corner of the town's upper district, this castle served as a residence for Archduke Ferdinand II’s son, Karl, from 1609 to 1618. During Karl’s tenure, the castle became a prosperous center for craft and trade, though much of the town and castle were later devastated in the Thirty Years’ War.
The castle burned down in 1703 but remains a significant historical landmark today, representing the only Habsburg residence in Germany. It is now a key tourist attraction featuring its Renaissance architecture and court church, alongside other historic sites in Günzburg.
