Castle Hartenfels
Germany, Germany
Castle Hartenfels, a Renaissance masterpiece in Torgau, Saxony, Germany, on the Elbe River, originated as a medieval fortress expanded from 1533 by Elector John Frederick the Magnanimous into a grand residence with stone wings around a courtyard, featuring the iconic 28-meter Great Wendelstein spiral staircase.
Its castle chapel, designed with input from Martin Luther and Lucas Cranach, became the world's first newly built Protestant church when Luther consecrated it in 1544, embodying Reformation ideals in architecture and art.
Later used as a fortress, barracks, and now a museum with exhibitions on court life, it houses three bears in a traditional pit and offers guided tours of its historic rooms.
