Castle "Isabella Morra" - Valsinni
Valsinni, Italy, Italy
Castle "Isabella Morra", also known as the Castle of Valsinni, is a medieval fortress overlooking the village of Valsinni in Basilicata.
Built between the 11th and 12th centuries on the site of earlier fortifications, it occupies a strategic position above the Sinni Valley and has been an important landmark for centuries. The castle is most famous as the home of Isabella Morra, a Renaissance poet whose tragic life made her one of the most significant literary figures of southern Italy.
Living in isolation within the castle, she wrote deeply personal poetry before being killed by her brothers in the 1540s after they discovered her correspondence with a neighboring nobleman. Today, the castle is a major cultural attraction and the center of the Isabella Morra Literary Park. Visitors come to explore its historic rooms, learn about the poet’s life, and enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding countryside that inspired many of her works.
