The Castle of Barisciano is a medieval fortress located in the Abruzzo region of central Italy, high on Mount Selva overlooking the Navelli Plateau and routes leading to the Gran Sasso mountains.

Originally established around the early Middle Ages and expanded in the 13th century, it served as a refuge for local residents during times of danger. The castle played a role in the history of nearby L’Aquila but was attacked and largely destroyed in 1424 during the campaigns of the condottiero Braccio da Montone.

As its military importance declined, it was gradually abandoned by the 16th century. Today, the castle survives as an impressive ruin, featuring long defensive walls, multiple towers, and the remains of internal buildings. Its dramatic hilltop setting and panoramic views make it one of the most notable medieval sites in the area and a popular destination for visitors interested in history and nature.
