Castle of Chiavari
Chiavari, Italy, Italy
The Castle of Chiavari is a medieval fortress that stands on a hill overlooking the coastal town of Chiavari in Liguria.
Built between about 1140 and 1147, it was one of the earliest castles constructed along the Italian Riviera and was designed to protect the town, its harbor, and important trade routes. Throughout the Middle Ages, the castle played a key defensive role and was repeatedly attacked, besieged, and rebuilt during conflicts involving powerful local families and the rival Guelph and Ghibelline factions.
As a result, Chiavari developed an extensive system of walls and towers around the town. Today, the castle survives mainly as a historic landmark with notable ruins and a restored tower. Its elevated position offers impressive views over Chiavari and the Gulf of Tigullio, making it an important reminder of the town’s medieval past.
