Castle of Gioiosa Guardia
Italy, Italy
The Castle of Gioiosa Guardia is a medieval fortress ruin located on a hill near Villamassargia in southwestern Sardinia.
Built during the 12th or 13th century, it occupied a strategic position overlooking the Cixerri Valley and was used to control and defend this important area. The castle is generally associated with the powerful Della Gherardesca family, who ruled much of southwestern Sardinia during the Middle Ages. Throughout its history, the fortress was involved in regional conflicts and changed hands several times.
It was briefly occupied by Guelfo della Gherardesca and later played a role in the struggles between the Judicate of Arborea and the Kingdom of Sardinia, including a temporary occupation by Brancaleone Doria, husband of Eleonora of Arborea. Today, only ruins remain, including parts of the tower, walls, and cisterns, but the site still offers impressive views of the surrounding countryside.
