The Castle of Ocre is a medieval fortified settlement perched on Mount Circolo above the village of Ocre in Italy’s Abruzzo region.

Dating back to the 12th century, it occupied a strategic position overlooking the Aterno Valley and was an important stronghold during the Norman and medieval periods. Unlike a traditional castle, it functioned as a fortified village enclosed by defensive walls. Within its triangular perimeter were houses, tower-houses, streets, and a church, creating a self-contained community protected from attack.

The castle suffered repeated attacks and sackings over the centuries, particularly during regional conflicts in the 13th and 15th centuries. As its military importance declined, the settlement was gradually abandoned, leaving the impressive ruins seen today. The site remains one of Abruzzo’s most atmospheric medieval landmarks, admired for its history and panoramic views.
