Castle of Pedres (ruins)
Italy, Italy
The Castle of Pedres is a ruined medieval fortress located on a granite hill just outside Olbia in northeastern Sardinia.
Built in the 13th century during the rule of the Visconti family of Pisa, it was designed to protect the nearby town of Civita and to control important routes across the region. Because of its strategic position, the castle changed hands several times between the Pisans, the Knights Hospitaller, the Aragonese, and the rulers of Arborea.
As the area declined in importance, the fortress was gradually abandoned in the early 15th century. Today, visitors can explore the remains of its walls, cisterns, courtyards, and central tower while enjoying panoramic views of Olbia and the surrounding countryside. Despite being in ruins, the Castle of Pedres remains one of the most significant medieval landmarks in the Gallura region.
