Castle of Sprondasino
Civitanova del Sannio, Province of Isernia, Italy, Italy
The Castle of Sprondasino is a ruined medieval fortress located in the territory of Civitanova del Sannio, in the Province of Isernia, Molise.
Built in the 12th century on a strategically positioned hill, it stood at the crossroads of important livestock-trading and transhumance routes, allowing it to control movement through the Trigno and Verrino valleys. Historical records show that the castle changed hands several times during the Middle Ages and played a role in regional conflicts.
Its strategic importance ended after it was destroyed by the devastating earthquake of 1456, after which it was never fully rebuilt. Today, only ruins of the fortress remain, partially hidden by woodland. Despite its ruined state, the site is valued for its historical significance and its connection to the medieval history of Molise, offering a glimpse into the region’s former defensive network and pastoral routes.
