Castle Osterburg
Krummhörn, Germany, Germany
Castle Osterburg in Krummhörn, Germany, is a high medieval moated castle located in the village of Groothusen, originally one of three strongholds alongside the now-destroyed Middelburg and Westerburg.
Rebuilt around 1490 by the chieftain family of Beninga with a long two-story hall as its oldest part, it was expanded into a three-winged manor house by 1550, later altered with a Gulf farmhouse in 1707 and a front hallway in 1900 while retaining its rear original form.
Surrounded by a moat, park, and old lime tree avenue with baroque gate pillars, it remains privately owned by Beninga descendants, housing a rich collection of East Frisian cultural artifacts, ancestral portraits, furniture, weapons, and a library, available for guided tours and bed-and-breakfast stays.
