Verified Castle Sabaudo

Ivrea, Italy, Italy

Castle Sabaudo, also known as the Castello di Ivrea or the “Castle of the Red Towers,” is a medieval fortress overlooking the city of Ivrea in Piedmont, northern Italy.

It was commissioned by Amedeo VI of Savoy in 1358 as a symbol of Savoy power and to defend the important route leading toward the Aosta Valley. The castle is easily recognized by its square layout, large inner courtyard, moat, and four imposing cylindrical towers built of red brick. Over time it served both as a noble residence for the House of Savoy and as a military stronghold. Later, it was used as a prison for more than two centuries.

Today, the restored castle is one of Ivrea’s most important landmarks. Visitors can explore parts of the fortress and enjoy panoramic views of the city, the Canavese region, and the surrounding Alpine landscape, making it a key attraction for those interested in history and architecture.
