Catanzaro is the capital city of Calabria, Italy, located about 343 meters above sea level overlooking the Gulf of Squillace.

Founded in the 10th century as a Byzantine settlement, it later came under Norman rule and played important roles in various historical periods, including resisting a siege in 1528 and participating in the Napoleonic Wars and the Risorgimento Italian unification movement.

The city became famous from the 9th to 11th centuries for its silk production, supplying much of Europe and earning it the title of lace capital of Europe. Catanzaro’s historic center features medieval streets, baroque churches like San Domenico with notable artworks, and Norman fortifications.

Natural disasters, including several earthquakes and World War II bombings, have marked its history, yet the city remains a cultural and economic hub with museums, gardens, and panoramic viewpoints over the Fiumarella valley and the gulf.
