Centennial Arboretum
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States
The Centennial Arboretum in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is a 27-acre arboretum located within the Fairmount Park Horticulture Center grounds.
Many of the trees and shrubs were originally planted in 1876 for the American Centennial Exposition, the country’s first World’s Fair, hosted in Philadelphia. This historic exposition showcased horticultural specimens from Asia, Europe, and North America, creating a diverse and internationally inspired collection that remains today.
Although the original Horticultural Hall was damaged and replaced, the arboretum’s legacy continues with a variety of specimen trees and shrubs representing different continents. Nearby is the Shofuso Japanese House and Garden, a traditional-style garden brought to Philadelphia in 1957, enriching the cultural landscape. The Centennial Arboretum is open daily without charge, offering visitors a mixture of natural beauty, horticultural history, and cultural significance in an urban park setting.
