The Charles V Castle of Lecce is a large Renaissance fortress located in the historic center of Lecce, Puglia.

Although the site had earlier medieval fortifications, the castle was extensively rebuilt in 1539 by order of Emperor Charles V and designed by the military engineer Gian Giacomo dell’Acaya to protect the city from attacks arriving from the Adriatic coast. With its massive walls, bastions, and defensive layout, the castle became one of the most important military structures in southern Italy.

Over time, its role evolved from a fortress to a military barracks and later a civic and cultural venue. Today, the castle is one of Lecce’s most significant landmarks, hosting exhibitions, events, and cultural activities. Its blend of military architecture, historical importance, and central location makes it a key attraction for visitors exploring the city’s rich heritage.
