Châtel-Argent
Italy, Italy
Châtel-Argent is the dramatic ruin of a medieval castle perched on a rocky hill above the town of Villeneuve in Italy’s Aosta Valley.
First mentioned in documents in the 12th century, it occupied a highly strategic position overlooking the Dora Baltea Valley and important routes through the Alps, making it an important defensive stronghold of the House of Savoy. The castle’s name, which means “Silver Castle,” is believed to be linked to a mint that once operated there.
Although it was not usually a permanent residence, it served as a refuge and military fortress in times of danger. The site also includes a Romanesque chapel dating from the 11th century. Today, visitors can explore the ruins, including the impressive watchtower and surviving walls. The castle is especially valued for its rich history and spectacular panoramic views of the Aosta Valley and surrounding mountains.
