Verified Chavez Ravine Arboretum

Los Angeles, California, United States

The Chavez Ravine Arboretum, located in Elysian Park near Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles, California, was founded in 1893 by the Los Angeles Horticultural Society.

It originally covered ten acres with the city providing irrigation for the initial plantings of rare tree species. The arboretum grew through the 1920s and now contains more than 100 varieties of trees from around the world, including some of the oldest and largest Cape Chestnut, Kauri, and Tipu trees in the United States. Many of the original trees are still standing today, making it one of the oldest living tree collections in the city.

In 1967, it was declared a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument. The arboretum is maintained by the Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks and continues to serve as a green space for education and enjoyment, awaiting accreditation as an official horticultural landmark. Its history and survival through decades symbolize the resilience and legacy of civic conservation efforts in Los Angeles.
