Chiaramonte Castle
Favara, Free municipal consortium of Agrigento, Italy, Italy
Chiaramonte Castle in Favara is a well-preserved medieval fortress built in the late 13th century and closely associated with the powerful Chiaramonte family, one of the most influential noble dynasties in Sicily.
Originally constructed as a fortified residence, it became an important symbol of local authority and remained a noble dwelling for several centuries. The castle combines defensive and residential features, including a central courtyard, elegant halls, and fortified outer walls. Over time, parts of the building were used as prisons, and traces of graffiti left by former prisoners can still be found on some walls.
Today, the castle is owned by the municipality of Favara and serves as a cultural and historical landmark. Following restoration work, it hosts exhibitions, conferences, and public events, allowing visitors to explore an important piece of Sicily’s medieval heritage.
